Three ways to learn English by Jamila Lyiscott
Ted Video Summary Three
ways to learn English by Jamila Lyiscott
Jamila
begins her speech by captivating her audience. She uses big words and a strong
voice. Immediately you're intrigued. She goes on to describe the common
stereotype that she does not speak properly. She argues that she is trilingual
and that her knowledge of how to communicate with different audiences makes her
more articulate than others may see. She states that she can talk business like
by saying "hello", she can talk to her friends on the street by using
language such as "Whats good?", and she can also speak her native
language which is Jamaican by saying "Wa't'a'gwan", which means whats
up. Jamila's argument is valid. You can speak English in many ways. There is
old English, Shakespearean English, and many other kinds. I speak differently
with my family and friends than I would with my professor. To my friends I
would use terms that would be considered inappropriate to use in a conversation
with a professor.
