Why is ‘x’ the unknown? by Terry Moore
Summary Why is ‘x’ the unknown? by Terry Moore
He has the answer to a question that all we have. Why is it
that letter X represent the unknown?
He said, its everywhere in the Culture: X prize, X files, Project X, Tdex? And finally we finalizes the introduction with a one single question: Where would that come from?
He said, its everywhere in the Culture: X prize, X files, Project X, Tdex? And finally we finalizes the introduction with a one single question: Where would that come from?
Six years ago, he decides that he would learn Arabic, which is the
supremely logical language, namely each word, sentences or phrase is like
crafting a equation, since every part is extremely precise.
That is one of the reason that so much of knowledge that we
identificated as Western science is originally from the first centuries by
Persians, Arabs and Turks. This include a little system called al-jebra,
as knows as “the system for reconciling disparate parts”. Posterior, Al-jebr
came into English as algebra. When the Arabic texts arrived in the 11th
and 12th century, specifically Spain, they were tremendous interest in
translation this wisdom into a European language.
But they had two problems, namely, complex of Arabic language and
Arabic sound without equivalences in European Language. One of the
culprits is the letter SH, it sounds like SH. And it’s also the very first
letter of the word shalan, which means “something” just the English word
something, something undefined, unknown thing.
When they started with the translation of the material, they found
the word shalan, and can’t be rendered into Spanish because Spanish doesn’t
have that SH, that “sh” sound. So by convention, they created a rule in which
they borrowed the CK sound, “ck” sound, from the classical Greek in the form of
the letter Kai.
Later when this material was translated into a common European
language, which is to say Latin, they simply replaced the Greek Kai with the
Latin X. And once that happened, once this material was in Latin, it formed the
basis for mathematics textbooks for almost 600 years.
He said: Now, we have the answer to our question. Why is it that X is the unknown? X is the unknown because you can’t say “sh” in Spanish.
