Wuthering Heights Summary (Chapter 1-4)
- Lockwood, a wealthy man, goes to visit to his landlord, Mr. Heathcliff to introduce himself as the tenant at Thrushcross Grange.
- When enter Wuthering Heights, Lockwood notices but does not comment upon the date "1500" and the name "Hareton Earnshaw" above the principal door.
- Lockwood, an unwelcome guest, soon meets Joseph as a servant, and a pack of dogs that have overrun the farmhouse.
- Although he receives no encouragement from his host, Lockwood decides to make a return visit.
- The next day Lockwood returns to Wuthering Heights because he doesn’t really have anything to do, and he is not welcomed and made to feel like a pain in the ass for being there, then he meets Joseph, Catherine and Hareton and there is any of them smile or are very pleasant.
- Lockwood is forced to stay at Wuthering Heights for the night because it has gotten dark and there is a snow storm and he could not walk the 4 miles back to Thrushcross Grange.
- They put Lockwood in an old bedroom that the housekeeper says Heathcliff has a strange feeling about.
- Lockwood discovers a bed hidden behind panels and decides to spend the night there, safe from Heathcliff, then by candlelight Lockwood spots three names : Catherine Earnshaw, Catherine Heathcliff, and Catherine Linton, and some books.
- Unable to fall asleep, he glances through the mildewed books.
- He finds a diary belonging to Catherine and begins reading it, then he falls asleep reading the diary and starts dreaming.
- He has a nightmare that Catherine is calling to hime from outside the window saying, "let me in."
- He feels her ice cold hand and sees a little girl’s face outside of the window and he gets freaked out and starts screaming.
- Heathcliff comes to see what is happening and is shocked by the words that Lockwood is yelling in a one side conversation with Catherine.
- Heathcliff is all fired up about this and sends Lockwood out of the room and he opens the window and yells for Catherine, his love, to come in, to come back to him!
- Heathcliff walks Lockwood home to show him the way through the snow.
- Lockwood meets Mrs. Dean.
- Lockwood asks Mrs. Dean about everyone at Wuthering Heights and their connections to eachother and Thrushcross Grange.
- Mrs. Dean informs him that the widow's maiden name was Catherine Linton, the daughter of mrs. Dean's late master, and that Hareton Earnshaw is the nephew of her late master's wife.
- Cathy is the last of the Lintons, and Hareton is the last of the Earnshaws, then Nelly also reveals that Heathcliff had married Mr. Linton's sister.
- This bit of information piques Lockwood's curiosity, so he encourages Nelly to tell him the history of the people and places he has encountered.
